For Mohammed Shafiuddin, Bidriware is more than a craft—it is a tradition that has been an integral part of his life since childhood. Years of hands-on experience have given him a deep understanding of the craft and its practices. His work has received recognition through the Karnataka Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd., Bengaluru, which selected specimens of his work. He has also participated in industrial exhibitions in different parts of India, including events at Goa and Ahmedabad conducted by the Government of India. These experiences have allowed him to represent the craft beyond its traditional setting and contribute to greater awareness and appreciation of Bidriware.
Recognition and Achievement
One of the significant milestones in Mohammed Shafiuddin’s career is receiving the State Award for Bidri Ware Craft in 1994. The award stands as a recognition of his skill, dedication, and contribution to the traditional Bidriware craft. It reflects the level of craftsmanship achieved through years of practice and his commitment to maintaining the standards and heritage of this distinctive art form.
Taking the Craft Beyond Borders
Mohammed Shafiuddin’s journey as a craftsman has also taken him beyond India. In 1986, he attended a Festival of Science Exhibition at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington, USA, held from 1 July to 2 November. He has also visited Canada and Japan, gaining exposure to international audiences and cultural environments. These international experiences provided opportunities to represent Indian craftsmanship and participate in wider cultural and exhibition platforms.
A Teacher and Mentor to the Next Generation
An important part of Mohammed Shafiuddin’s contribution to Bidriware is his role as an instructor and mentor. He has worked as an instructor in skill-upgradation training for Bidriware, helping other artisans develop and strengthen their skills. Through a training programme sponsored by the Government of India, New Delhi, he provided training to 30 trainees. He has also provided training to 20 trainees through a programme sponsored by NABARD. His role as a teacher reflects a broader commitment to the future of the craft. By sharing his experience and knowledge with emerging artisans, he contributes to the continuity of traditional Bidriware skills and helps ensure that the craft remains a living tradition.
Supporting the Artisan Community
Beyond his individual practice and teaching, Mohammed Shafiuddin has also been involved in the wider artisan community. He has served as the Secretary of the Bidri Artisan Union, Bidar, contributing to the collective interests and representation of artisans associated with the craft. His involvement demonstrates his commitment not only to his own artistic journey but also to the larger community of craftspeople who continue to preserve Bidriware as a traditional art form.
