Mohd. Abdul Rauf is a distinguished Bidri craftsman from Bidar, Karnataka, recognised for his expertise and contribution to the traditional craft of Bidri Ware. With extensive experience in the craft, he has developed specialised mastery in moulding block and pattern making, an important skill in the creation of intricate Bidri objects and designs. His craftsmanship has earned significant recognition at both the state and national levels.
He received the State Award from the Government of Karnataka in 1991, followed by the prestigious National Award in 2004 from the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, recognising his craftsmanship and contribution to the development of Bidri Craft.
Mastery in Moulding & Pattern Making
One of Rauf’s key areas of expertise lies in the preparation of moulding blocks and patterns, a specialised aspect of Bidri craftsmanship that demands precision, patience and a strong understanding of traditional forms and motifs. His experience extends beyond individual craft production to the training and transmission of traditional skills. During 2002–03, he provided moulding and pattern-making training to 20 Bidri artisans under a NABARD-sponsored programme. This contribution highlights his role not only as a practising craftsman but also as a master trainer and knowledge bearer, helping other artisans develop specialised skills within the craft tradition.
Recognition Beyond Borders
Rauf’s expertise has also represented Bidri craftsmanship on an international platform. In 1992, he was deputed to China to participate in a public demonstration of craft at the Workers’ Cultural Palace in Beijing, held from 27 June to 10 July. Such demonstrations provided an opportunity to present the skill and intricacy of Indian traditional craftsmanship to an international audience.
